Fuat Sezgin, İslam medeniyet tarihine önemli katkılar yapmış çağdaş Türk düşünürlerinden birisidir. O, İslam bilim tarihi üzerine yapmış olduğu araştırmalar ile bilim tarihinde yeni bir çığır açmıştır. Ona göre, insanlık tarihinin gelişim düzeyi Batı medeniyetinin gelişim düzeyi ile tekdüze bir perspektiften değerlendirilmiştir. Bu durum, gerek doğu dünyasında gerekse Batı dünyasında yanlış bir İslam medeniyeti algısına sebep olmuştur. Böylece insanlık tarihine katkısı yok denecek kadar az olan ve Batı medeniyeti karşısında yetersiz bir konuma indirgenen İslam medeniyeti anlayışı ortaya çıkmıştır. Oysa İslam medeniyet tarihi, insanlık tarihinin en önemli dönüm noktalarından birisidir. Çünkü İslam medeniyetinde gelişen bilim ve teknoloji hem İslam coğrafyasında hem de dünya coğrafyasında insanlık için yeni yaklaşımların oluşumuna imkân sağlamıştır. İslam bilim ve teknoloji tarihinde ki faaliyetler insanlığın günümüz bilim ve teknolojisine ulaşmasında önemli katkılar sağlamıştır. Bu sebepledir ki, insanlığın en önemli bilgi türlerinden birisi olan bilim, sadece tek bir ulus ve uygarlığın ürünü değildir. İran, Hint, Çin, Mısır, Arap, Yunan ve Türk gibi birçok ulus ve uyarlığın ortak ürünüdür. Bununla birlikte İslam medeniyeti üzerine hümanist oryantalistlerin yapmış olduğu çalışmalar hem yetersiz kalmış hem de ideolojik sebeplerden dikkate alınmamıştır. Bu nedenle bilimler tarihinin yazımında İslam medeniyetinin katkısı yeter düzeyde ortaya koyulmamıştır. Dola yısıyla Sezgin, İslam bilim ve teknoloji tarihi üzerine düşünceleriyle ezberlenmiş doğmaların ötesine geçen, üstü örtük gerçeklerin ortaya çıkarılmasına önemli katkılar sağlayan ve bilim tarihine yeni bir perspektif kazandıran öncü bir bilim insanıdır.
Fuat Sezgin is one of the contemporary Turkish thinkers made important contributions to the history of Islamic civilization. He has opened a new era in the history of science through research on the history of Islamic science. According to him, the level of development of human history is evaluated from a uniform perspective with the level of development of Western civilization. This situation has led to the perception of a false Islamic civilization both in the Eastern world and in the Western world. So the Islamic civilization has emerged that reduced to an inadequate position in the face of Western civilization and little contribution to the history of humanity. However, the history of Islamic civilization is one of the most important turning points in human history. Because science and technology developed in Islamic civilization has enabled the formation of new approaches for humanity both in Islamic geography and in the world geography. The activities in the history of Islamic science and technology have made important contributions to the access of humanity to today's science and technology. For this reason, science, which is one of the most important types of knowledge of humanity, is not the product of only one nation and civilization. It is a common product of many nations and civilization such as Iran, Indian, China, Egypt, Arab, Greek and Turkish. However, the work of humanist orientalists on Islamic civilization is both insufficient and not considered for ideological reasons. Therefore, the contribution of Islamic civilization in the writing of the history of sciences is not sufficiently proven. He is a pioneer scientist who gives a new perspective to the history of science and provides important contributions to revealing implicit truths, goes beyond mistakes with his thoughts on the history of Islam c science and technology.
