In this research, it was investigated the students’ opinions about the whole, half, quarter concepts in the learning subject of fractions and the basic skills they use when explaining these concepts. While the skills used by the students were classified, the skills included in the 2015 Mathematics Lesson Curriculum (for grades 1-4) were taken into account. In this study, case study from qualitative research method was used and participants were 12 students who were educated in the third grade of primary school in a public school and determined by purposive sampling method. The data of the study were collected through semi-structured interviews. In the interviews, a scale consisted nine questions were used. Data were analyzed with content analysis. Analyzes have shown that the students explained the whole, half and quarter concepts in general by associating with each other and by using examples related to their daily life. In addition, it is determined that the students have some errors by referring to the physical size of another concept in the process of expressing any of the concepts of whole, half or quarter. In mathematical basic skills, students mostly used reasoning and communication, while they rarely used problem solving skills, and they have difficulties in mathematical modeling skills in general.
