As it is known, Halikarnas Balıkçısı developed the literary idea called as “Neo-Greek” which suggests fronting Ancient Greek sources in the narrow sense and feding from Mediterranean Culture in the broad sense by Yahya Kemal Beyatlı and Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, and he also revealed a civilization and history thesis of “Blue Anatolia” by refering to Anatolia phylosophy and Turkish History Thesis. The most prominent feature of the writer, who used the name of “Halikarnas Balıkçısı” by waiving his real name “Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı”, used the nature especially the sea as an indispensable element in his works while connecting the characters, the fiction and the environment. In the novel of Turgut Reis published by “Halikarnas Balıkçısı” in 1962, the battles of Turgut Reis, who attended some important sea wars with the Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha in order to Turkification of Mediterranean Region in the period of II. Bayezid, Yavuz Sultan Selim and Kanunî Sultan Süleyman and was dead as a result of an accident occurred during the battle against Spaniard in Malta. In this article, it is evaluated that how Halikarnas Balıkçısı’s the two indispensable passions of history and sea turned into resultants in his historical novel of Turgut Reis. In this context, the study is composed of three different sections. So firstly, the historical identity of Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı is emphasized and secondly the characteristics of historical novels, which are being still discussed and is the tangent point of the disciplines of history and literature, are identifiedby determining the relation between them. Finally, “Turgut Reis” novel of Halikarnas Balıkçısı, which is chosen as a sample, is evaluated in the aspects of the writer’s understanding of history and the historical novel characteristics.
