The current economic depression has started as a financial crisis and steadily converted itself to an economic crisis due to labor layoffs. The economic measures and packages implemented to cure the damages of the crises let to the interrogation of the principles of the Washington Consensus which laid down the foundations of the expanding economic system of our day. On the other hand, in the core of the problems lay the inherent problems of the capitalist, liberal market economic system. The inherent problems of the system are the “profit” motive, misconception of the human element of the economy, and viewing labor as a cost factor. At the current stage of the crisis, curing the inherent problems of the current system does not receive sufficient attention. There is a tendency to preserve the current system by temporary measures. On the other hand, the lessons derived from the crisis may help to lay down the foundations to design economic systems that are more compatible with the aspirations of mankind.
