Three are different approaches on how national identities emerged. Depending on which one of these seems to be more realistic, the view to the national identities will differ. When preparing the programmes aimed at solving the identity problems seen in several countries, it is neccessary to state how and when the national identity was emerged. In this study we have put forward the nationalism, national identity, and national identity types and tried to examine the nationalism theories. In this context, the thesis which suggests that national identities were emerged as a result of building in modern sense has been supported. In the article it is intended to put forward the nationalism theories in plain words and general terms.
