The aim of this research is to determine the effect of prediction-observation-explanation method on academic achievement and retention of learning in science course. Pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used in this study. The study group, comprised 64 4th graders studying in two different classes at a public school in Kastamonu. One class was randomly assigned as an experimental group and the other was assigned as a control group. The achievement test developed by Uyanık (2014) was used as data collection tool. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 statistical software package. Independent t-test was used in the analysis process. According to the obtained results, there were found to be a significant differences between the experimental group and the control groups’ academic achievement post-test scores in favor of experimental group. In addition to this, difference between the experimental and control groups’ retention test scores was determined to be statistically significant in favor of the experimental group.
