16. yüzyıl’dan itibaren Orta Avrupa’daki gezginler Osmanlı Uygarlığı’nı tanımak için seyahatlere başlamışlardır. Doğa meraklısı gezginler bu seyahatleri esnasında gördükleri bitkileri, hayvanları seyahatnamelerine tanımlamışlar, adlandırmışlar ve kayıt altına almışlardır. 16. yy botanik araştırmalarını gerçekleştiren ilk kişi Pierre Belon olup, sırasıyla diğerleri Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq , Willem Quackelbeen , Hans Dernschwam (14941568), Leonhart Rauwolﬀ adlı kişilerdir. Bu yabancı araştırmacılar dışında Kanuni Sultan Süleyman döneminde baş müftü olan Ebusuud Efendi de bahçe bitkileri üzerinde araştırmalar yapmıştır. Bu kişiler; Osmanlı Devleti’nde botanik araştırmalarını yapan ilk araştırmacılar ve eserleri de ilk ﬂ oristik çalışmalar olarak kabul edilmektedir
