Abstract:

George Herbert Mead is one of the leading theorists of symbolic interaction. With the title of social behavior, he developed a synthetic social theory, which, under the influence of the pragmatist roots, reflects the non-dualist, individual and society’s relative unity. Mead presents a criticism of the trends that reach mechanism in sociology and psychology through social behavior and that stands ahead of a relative understanding. Our article first addressed the synthesistic tendency that exceeds the contradiction between social behaviorism, those who encourage human actions and the product of internal processes (psychology), which sees the same actions only as a behavior of conformity to intrinsic values and norms (socialism). Secondly, it is intended to identify the strong aspects of Mead's theory that involve "relational activity". In this context, Mead’s analysis of “I” and “I/I” as two aspects of self has been attempted to demonstrate how effective this perception of relational function is in the reflective intelligence that performs by re-upplying the results of his own experience and in the original inter-subjective character of meaningful symbolic interaction between individuals. Thus our article emphasizes that Mead’s synthetic perspective is a rich source that keeps its up-to-date for today.
