In the twentieth century American women writers have recently drawn on theology, philosophy, psychology and literature to demonstrate in impressive detail the historic collusion between the notion of a separate self and the cultural forces that have oppressed women. Through the framework of feminist and psychoanalytical criticism, we see the life of a woman without selfesteem, which is full of pervasive imagery in detail. This article deals with a modern woman who draws the boundaries of her separative self. It aims at exploring Esther's relationship with her mother and the other women in Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar in order to demonstrate her suicidal attempt as a way of forming her own autonomous self. There is a close link between Esther's suicide and her separation from her mother who forms a hindrance for her autonomy. After having nervous breakdown, this woman who controls her life to an extent, also manages to separate from her female fellows, the representatives of the patriarchal society she lives in, at the end of the novel
