The purpose of this study was to examine frequencies and problems of using monologs and dialogs in narrative texts written by 5th grade students. Population of the research is composed of students who have been studying in 5th grade of public elementary schools in the center of provinces of Hatay in 2007-2008 school year. Randomly selected sample includes 127 students from 3 elementary schools, which represent different socio-economic level of population. The basic results that recorded in this study are; while 21% of students don’t use quotations in their stories, 28% of them use it one time; 23% of them use it twice; 17% of them use it three times; 11% of them use it four times and more. According to these results; quotation is used 1.81 per a story. 76% of 230 quotations which are composed in the stories is direct dialog, 5% of it is indirect dialog, 13% of it is direct monolog, and 6% of it is indirect monolog. Most of these quotations are in the middle part (64.4%), 14.3% of it is in the introduction part, 21.3% of it is in the result part of the stories. 5.3 formal problems and 2.3 semantic problems have been occurred in the usage of quotations of students per a story. In the study, it has been determined that no significant difference between female and male students from the point of view of the usage of quotation
