Abstract:

Both in past and today the Netherlands has played a role of haven for the various disadvantaged religious groups. The pluralist structure which progressed depending on that climate, created the main character of the political system. Seeking a balance between political poles in the system made establishing the separation of church and state necessary. In this article the historical roots and present-day view of the Netherlands’ religion and state relations model was discussed. The pluralist character of the political system in this country and the conception of the separation of church-state which shaped under the influence of that character was studied by analysing the notion of religion-state relations and the practice of the separation of church-state in the Netherlands
