So many results that aren't mine?

Abstract:

The acquisition of expectations related to algebra at elementary level play a major role in students’ daily lives. Therefore, the aim of this study is ı) to determine the possible difficulties and misconceptions of elementary school six grade students about the algebra learning domain and ii) to ascertain to what extent the worksheets are effective in comprehending the topics and correcting misconceptions in algebra learning domain. Control grouped pre-test and post-test experiment model was used in the study. Students in the experiment group were instructed by using worksheets whereas students in the control group were instructed according to the traditional teaching approach. In order to determine the misconceptions about algebra learning domain, both students in experiment and control groups were tested by the Algebra Test which was developed by the researcher before and after the instruction. Findings of the study implied that (i) students had some misconceptions about letters used in algebra, variables and the equity concept before instruction and (ii) the instruction supported by the worksheets were effective in decreasing level of these misconceptions whereas the traditional instruction was not effective in decreasing level of the misconceptions
