Understanding what is said to the point and to the full depends on the development of listening skills. Note taking methods are some of the best ways to improve listening skills and retention of what is listened. One of these methods is Cornell Method. Although Cornell method, devised by Walter Pauk to develop the skills of the students in listening and comprehension, is widely used abroad, it is rarely known in our country. The method is thought to increase the level of understanding and listening, which enables students to express themselves freely on their own style, with keywords and related. In this study, Cornell method has been used to reveal the effect on university students’ listening comprehension and retention. The study has been applied on the students in classes 2/A ve 2/B in the department of Turkish studies in 2008-2009 school term at Kâzım Karabekir school of education, Atatürk University. An experimental pattern has been employed based on pre-test and post-test together with control group. Following the listening comprehension pre-test in both control and experimental groups, the experimental group students have been taught strategies in Cornell note taking system while the control group has been told about traditional note taking system and the relevant applications have been done. After 8 hour applications, the listening comprehension test given as pre-test before have been given as post-test to both groups and the same test has been applied as retention test within four weeks. As a result of the statistical analysis, a significant difference is found between experimental and control groups in terms of listening comprehension
