Historically, the age at which children should start compulsory education has been increased in the U.S. and decreased in the European countries. In Turkey, it has been formulated around when children should start the first grade and it sometimes increased and sometimes decreased. International studies have shown that the magnitude and direction of the effect of age of entry on children's achievement vary by country. In Turkey, although the minimum age to start the first grade has been changed many times, the effect of age of entry in first grade have been neglected. This research investigated the relationship between age of entry into the first grade and third grade mathematics, Turkish language, and life/social studies achievements. The findings showed that achievement of children who start on time increased as they get older. Achievement of children with delayed entry was lower than that of children with on-time entry
