Abstract:

The rapid change in technology, that led the increased use of the internet enabled organizations to form virtual teams intensely. In virtual teams, team members perform their duties in different places and times without face-to-face interaction by using technology and the internet heavily. In virtual teams, deviant behavior may result in improper use or uncontrolled use of business resources and that may create a number of legal and penal sanctions for the enterprise. Though its importance to organizations, no research came across in the literature investigating the effect of deviant behaviors on virtual teams. Therefore, in this quantitative research, the effects of deviant behaviors on virtual teams in businesses was investigated. Data, obtained from industry and public enterprises having virtual teams, was analyzed by exploratory factor analysis and multi regression techniques, based on 228 valid questionnaires. Result of the analysis revealed that “interpersonal deviant behaviors” are negatively effective both on the dimensions of “virtual team perception” and “virtual team cooperation” in virtual teams. On the other hand, “deviant behaviors against organizations” are positively effective on the dimensions of “virtual team perception” in virtual teams.
