Abstract:

Cyprus spent its most welfare time for centuries when it was controled by Ottoman Empite throughout 307 years. During ninteenth century in which notionalists riots movements prevailed and Ottoman Empire experiencing disintegration period oftime, Cyprus island affected badly by all of these upheavels. The growing competition among the big states in 1878, have brought Cyprus to the agenda, between the Ottoman Empire and Great Britain. Occording to the deals signed between Ottoman Empire and Great Britain, it was left to England as a military base. Taken to be used as a base against Russia by Great Britain, the island was turned into a ball of problems over time. Controled by British both formally and de facto until 1960, Cyprus was intended to be under the sovereignty of Greece with the idea of enosis. The idea of enosis has made the island unbearable for Turkish Cyprus community. Taking Greece’s support, Greeks raided Turkish villages and made big massacres. Upon these unwanted developments Turkey, which was guarantor countery at that time, had to intervene in Cyprus issue in order to bring it peace and order. During this operation 498 people from Turkish armed forces were martyred. Thousands of peoples participating in operation embroidered on the hearts of Turkish people as Cyprus Veterans.
