Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall Avrupa’da Doğu dünyasına karşı ilginin uyanmasını sağlamış ve Osmanlı tarihi konusunda uzun süre aşılamayan çalışmalar yapmış ilk oryantalistlerden biridir. Bu çalışmada Avusturyalı Osmanlı tarihçisi Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall’ın, öncelikle İstanbul’da tercümanlık görevinde bulunduğu sırada, 1804 yılı Ağustos’unda Bursa’ya yaptığı geziyi anlattığı seyahatnamesi tanıtılmış, daha sonra seyyahın Bursa sâkinlerinin yabancılara yaklaşımı, kentteki ekonomik faaliyetler, yemek kültürü ve kent toplumunun ileri gelenleri hakkında verdiği bilgiler değerlendirilmiştir

Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall is one of the first Orientalists in Europe to make up an interest in the Eastern world and to do long unvaccinated studies on the Ottoman history. In this study, the Austrian Ottoman historian Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, who was first in Istanbul as a translator, described his trip to Bursa in August 1804, then the information of the tour was evaluated about the approach of the Bursa people to foreigners, the economic activities in the city, the food culture and the advancements of the city community.
