It is possible to stumble upon anecdotes that make one think that incompetence in language, observation and knowledge of the first generation of Turkish students to study art abroad with the help of scholarships, has from time to time affected their artistic production. In the light of these examples, it's clear that some of our artists had difficulty in fully comprehending the developments in European art. It is also known that, as a result of heavy interaction with European artists and movements, some of our painters have in this process made works that could be considered copies. One can observe that the dependence on Western art (which is the result of efforts in westernization), has had a negative influence on these artists with regard to exhibiting unique artistic language. Considering the fact that, some of these students who have been sent to Europe to study art, have -upon their return to Turkey- worked in institutions that provide art education; it could be seen that the problems with their education in Europe could possibly have affected the development of Turkish painting.
