Bu çalışma, tarihsel süreçte Sivas şehrinin gelişimini ele almaktadır. İnsanın mekân üzerindeki değişiminönemli kanıtlarından birini oluşturan şehirler, geçmişte var olan toplumların kültürel özelliklerini anlamak ve yerleşmelerdeki sosyo-ekonomik değişkenleri belirlemek açısından önemlidir. Eğer şehirlerin tarihi birikimleri ve coğrafyaları doğru tahlil edilirse, bugünkü sorunlarına daha iyi çözümler üretebilir ve geleceğe dair planlamalar daha iyi yapılabilir. Araştırmanın konusunu oluşturan Sivas, bugün İç Anadolu Bölgesi’nin Yukarı Kızılırmak Bölümü’nde yer alır. Anadolu’yu doğuyu batıya, kuzeyi güneye bağlayan yolların kavşağında kurulan ve yerleşme tarihi boyunca farklı devletlerin hâkimiyetinde kalan şehir, sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel özellikleriyle önemli bir yerleşim merkezi olmuş ve kendine özgü bir form kazanmıştır. Bu çalışmada tarihsel süreçte Sivas şehrinin gelişimi değerlendirilmiş, bu gelişimi sağlayan faktörler vurgulanmış, şehrin gelişimine ilişkin bazı öneriler sunulmuştur.
