Sociology entered into the intellectual sphere in Turkey as a result of the orientation towards the West and provided the basis of the politics of Westernization. In this process, the first sociology texts, had been transferred into our country through journals. Journalism in Turkey, had been a gateway to the West. The crisis in the country was the reason of West orientation. Westernization is a forced policy that had been adopted at the state level. Sociology is a science, which had been transferred into our country in order to defend Westernization. The Sociology Journal (İçtimaiyat Mecmuası) had a great role in transferring Sociology into our country. The Sociology Journal is the first of its kind to be published on behalf of the institution in our country. The journal, issued by Ziya Gökalp, was the vanguard in the presentation of positivist sociology in our country. The journal, following the publication of six issues, was abolished after Ziya Gökalp was arrested. As the journal existed for a short time, the extent to which it reached its initial aims is a matter of debate. Nevertheless, Sociology Journal İçtimaiyat Mecmuası has a significant place in Turkey as it helped identify tendencies in sociology. The oldest institution that has represented sociology in Turkey is Istanbul University. Having had the same fate with the lectern throughout the history of sociology in Turkey, this journal has been as influential as the lectern in the development of sociology in Turkey. In this study, İçtimaiyat Mecmuası, the first series of Istanbul University Sociology Journal, was analyzed. Based Durkheim sociology, İçtimaiyat Mecmuası is a journal that has represented sociologism in our country. The journal predominantly focused on the scientific identity of sociology. Apart from the scope and methodological problems of sociology, such issues as nation, family, education are clarified with the help of sociology in the journal. More specifically, the properties and potentialities of a sociological theory that realizes the dynamics of the Turkish society are discussed within the framework of national sociology. We encounter sociological issues which open up discussions about the problems related with a new model of state and society, in addition to conceptual problems about the scope and methodology of sociology.
