Translation, which has been carried out as an activity through the human history, is a common communication medium in the relations between the societies and cultures. Yet, “teachability” of this activity, history of which dates back to centuries ago, and its emergence as a research subject is far more recent. By reason of this character, translation activity has been regarded as an area of expertise since the second half of the last century, and started to be researched with scientific interest. In this sense, it has been observed in recent years that translator training has been included ever-increasingly within many universities and scientific researches in this field have become prevalent. These discussions concentrate upon improving translator candidates in terms of translation skill and competence which are the basic objectives of translator training. “Translation competence” which translator candidates should acquire is the most significant subject that must be emphasized in terms of translator training. In this sense, translation competence also includes the acquisition of foreign language and native language awareness, theoretical knowledge, cultural competence and methodology for the candidates. Translator training should be organized in a way to acquire all of these skills. These skills, which should be acquired in an interrelated and coordinated way, seem to be indispensable in terms of achieving the ultimate goal in translator training. Acquisition of translation competence for the translator candidates depends before anything else on developing these skills in question. The aim of this descriptive study concerning the skills required to be acquired by translator candidates in translator training is to give a general review about these basic skills. This overview involves a general description of translator training, curriculum design and the qualifications which translators should have after the training. In this study, each topic was dealt with under different headings. The study highlights the consensus on the subject matter observed in the literature reviewed.
