Abstract:

In this study, variation of the amounts of gases which exist in the coal according to temperature and pressure conditions in the coal mines is analyzed. For this purpose, a new testing apparatus was developed in Anadolu Plazma Technology Energy Center laboratory and experiments on coals with different sizes (300 - 1000 µm ve 17 - 44 mm ) were carried out on the 293 K and 550 K temperature range and 0,1 bar and 1 bar pressure range. According to experiment results based on 300 - 1000 µm of coal size, while hydrogen gas was detected beginning from the temperature of 250C, methane gas was detected after the temperature of 2100C. On the other hand, based on 17 - 44 mm of coal size, while hydrogen gas was detected beginning from the temperature of 500C, methane gas was detected after the temperature of 3000C. It is seen from the experiments conducted in laboratory and coal mine, there are free hydrogen gases in the normal working conditions at 250C. Therefore, hydrogen gas should be measured as methane gas in coal mines
