The Gumushane city where the earliest record of mining is dated to be in the Early Bronze Age was governed by different empires such as Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantians, Trabzon Pontus and Ottomans. In the Gumushane city borders, there are over 100 historical mines that most of them were mined in the Ottoman Era. Historical mines were operated in parallel with different Ottoman periods of development, stagnation and decadence. The gold era for mining history of Gumushane city can be accepted to be 17th century. Until the end of 18th century, the mining operations in Gumushane were performed actively. After the active mining time during the 17th and 18th centuries, mines in Gumushane started to be abandoned because of some reasons such as no following the international technological developments. Beside, wars, mine stealers, the commissioned mine managers who misconducted their duties and had no respect to the laws, the worsening economy of the Ottoman Empire made the mining industry in Gumushane city be influenced negatively and stop in early years of the 20th century
