Joseph Campbell claims that a single story lies at the root of all narratives and that this single story is the journey of the hero. The hero meets various archetypes during this journey and one of them is the mentor. Mentor is the figure who guides and trains the apprentice. The word “mentor” has various meanings such as the wise man, the teacher, the guide and it can be traced back to the legend of Odysseia by Homeros. The mentor archetype trains the hero on his journey so that he can mature in spirit. Film studies demonstrate that this archetype is manifested within film heroes because film heroes encounter the mentor archetype and become transformed through training. This work aims to study the mentor archetype in the film Eşkıya in the context of “The Hero’s Journey”. Hence, the relationship of Baran and Cumali will be analyzed as the relationship of the mentor and the hero, while the function of the mentor archetype in narratives and in life will be surveyed.
