Abstract:

Sabiha Rüştü Bozcalı is known as the first woman illustrator of Turkey. Reşad Ekrem Koçu’s Istanbul Ansiklopedisi  was Bozcalı’s one of the most long-term works.  The encyclopedia's first volume which was issue as monthly fascicule was published in 1946. When the third volume was completed in 1948, the publishing life broke down due to economic problems. Encyclopedia beginning from first volume started to be published again in 1958 after ten years. But for the same reasons, in 1973, the Istanbul Ansiklopedisi, which was projected to have twenty-five volumes, ended in the eleventh volume. Istanbul Ansiklopedisi has a different content from classic encyclopedia formats. This content which critics time to time, is a unique qualification of encyclopedia. Koçu who is producer and editorial director, preferred to use illustration instead photograph for this encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia was prepared together with lots of precious authors and illustrators. In this paper, first of it was given information about Bozcalı’s life and İstanbul Ansiklopedisi. Afterwards, Bozcalı’s illustrations in eleven volumes of İstanbul Ansiklopedisi, were analyzed as quantitatively and qualitatively.
