Şehirlerin tarihi seyri boyunca gösterdikleri mekânsal gelişimleri ile nüfuslanma yapıları yakın ilişki içerisindedir. Şehirleşme hareketlerinin en önemli kıstaslarından biri olan nüfus olgusu özellikle sanayileşmenin hız kazandığı bölgelerde ön plana çıkmıştır. Benzer bir gelişim seyri izleyen Kocaeli ilinin merkezi olan İzmit şehri ve nüfus gelişimi için de aynı durum söz konusudur. İzmit, sanayileşme faaliyetleriyle istihdam olanakları yaratarak kısa sürede 300.000’i aşan şehir nüfus miktarı ve km2’ye düşen 4.600 kişilik nüfus yoğunluğu ile başta Marmara Bölgesi olmak üzere ülkemizin en yoğun nüfuslanmış alanlarından biri haline gelmiştir. İzmit şehrinde geçmişten beri siyasi olaylar, sanayileşme, deprem, idari sınırların değişiklikleri gibi birçok sebepten dolayı nüfus yapısında farklı süreçler meydana gelmiştir. Bu çalışmada İzmit şehrinin nüfus gelişiminin tarihsel süreci nedenleri ile birlikte değerlendirilmiştir.

Throughout history, the spatial development of cities and their population structures are closely related. The population phenomenon is one of the most important criteria of urbanization movements and has come into prominence in the regions wherever industrialization increased. The population growth of Izmit, the city center of the Kocaeli province, displays a similar process of development. Today, Izmit is one of the most densely populated areas, like the Marmara Region, because the city provides job opportunities by means of industrialization activities. Accordingly, Izmit has reached a population in excess of 300.000, and a population density of 4.600 people per square kilometer. Different periods have occurred in population structures for many reasons, including political events, industrialization, earthquakes, and changes in administrative boundaries. In this study, we assess the historical process of population change in the city of Izmit.
