Teaching English as a foreign language starts in early grades and also continues in higher education in Turkey. Although compulsory English education lasts such a long time, most people complain about not reaching a satisfactory level in English. The underlying reason of this reality might be the ignorance of the relationship between student success and some psychological factors. This study aims to reveal the shortcomings of the discussions on foreign language teaching and learning failures in Turkey. The aim of the study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between psychological factors such as self-efficacy, self-perception, self-control, motivation, gender and students’ academic achievements. Students from Gaziantep University Department of English Language Teaching participated in this research. The participants were given Personal Language Competence questionnaire consisting of 40 questions.
