(U)Mutsuz Bir Kadın Olarak Edith Hope/ Edith Hope as an Unhappy Woman
2017
Journal:

Author:
Abstract:

Anita Brookner chooses middle-aged, lonely, intelligent, sometimes interrogating, elegant but desperate women as heroes in her masterpiece Hotel du Lac, which she published in 1984 and won the Booker Prize. These women, who are not welcomed by the patriarchal society, are often the ones who seek happiness and love. Hotel du Lac's main heroine, Edith Hope, adapts to Brookner's traditional female character. Like all other characters, Edith is alone too. Brookner’s narrator Edith is 39 and she comes Hotel du Lac to finish her latest novel and at the same time to overcome her emotional problems. Giving the impression that she has a very interesting character, Edith turns into an ‘unhappy’ woman, who is in love with a married man. Because of this she forces herself to make a logic marriage. Because she is expected to go to Hotel du Lac to get rid of her problems. In this study, the place of woman in society will be discussed and the transformation of Edith, who has been working to reverse the male dominated society over time, will be dealt with. Besides, Hotel du Lac’s importance upon Edith will be explained.
