Family names which are important for culture-history, linguistics, folklorism studies constitute this study's base. This study gives point to forms of giving this family names and this family names' sociological means. Temettûat Registers of Bodrum Town recorded in 1845 and belonging to the nine neighborhoods form the main source of this study. In these records, family names which are registered to each one of the houses have been emphasized with this topic's content. Family names, occupations and nicknames which take part in Temettuât registers inform us in the socio-cultural field. Evaluating the registers within the research household heads were substantially recorded with their family name. That is to say, it is determined from the registers that household heads with a family name comprised about %70 of total number of household heads. The formation of family names has depended on socio-cultural status, occupation, distinctive physical appearance, attitude and behavior, country and ethnic origin. Consequently with this study, symbolic dimension of Turkish cultural life and social feature of family names which is important function in continuation of the culture and transfer to future generations have been aimed to assess.
