Henry James is an international novelist. He portrays the stories of American young girls in Europe being an internationally acclaimed and experienced novelist in two countries. His novels are considered an influential reason for moving and making American people approach to Europe. In both The Portrait of A Lady and The Wings Of Dove, James shows the world is shared between honest and deceiving people. The two protagonists are deceived by Europe people. In The Portrait of A Lady, Isabel is deceived by her husband because her marriage is a kind of arranged marriage based on material power. In The Wings of Dove, Milly lies and deceives her lover because Merton pretends to love her by heart but he attempts to get her money. So the actual story is in fact not about love stories but about the illegitimate ways of gaining material power. This paper seeks to stake out lies and deceit to gain a social status and power in society in both novels
