Abstract:

Having an important role in the vocabulary of a language, idioms have a national originality, and unlike words, in structures possesses characteristics belonging to its history, culture, social life, mythology, religion, and world view. Idioms, which are among the most important resources about the religious words, are the most important cultural elements in foundation of a society. When referring to spiritual values belonging to the field of religion and culture in the Russian language, the relation with the Bible first comes to mind. In Bible idioms appear prevalenty. In Russian language the Biblical idioms have just emerged when a vast majority of the society accepted Christianity. The Biblical idioms are witnesses of Russian culture, they are expressions, which are either from quotations in the Bible or on the basis of the Bible. In this context the subject of our study is to search for idioms, which has the Biblical origin. This paper aims to examine Russian bible idioms with their story formations and explain their religion, faith and belief values. In our study biblical idioms were found by scanning the dictionary of K.N. Dubrovina ““Entsiklopediçeskiy Slovar’ Bibleyskih Frazeologizmov”. Consequently, it appears that there have been many Russian idioms about their religious beliefs. In the study, idioms related to Bible are determined by scanning according to their meanings and functions and they are evaluated about their place in comparison with Russian language and was revealed the effect of religious understandings in Russian idioms.
