Özet:

The aim of this study is to analyze subjectivity in the short story Winter Dreams by F. Scott Fitzgerald. To this end, the original text was analyzed to find contexts with subjectivity based on Coquet’s (2007) “theory of instances”. The contexts with subjectivity were further divided into sub-categories of non-subject based on Öztürk Kasar’s (2017) "Typology of Non-subjects". The analysis of subjectivity in the original text yielded striking examples of subjectivity and non-subjects. For translation evaluation, two Turkish translations of the short story were analyzed based on Öztürk Kasar’s ( in Tuna and Öztürk Kasar, 2015) Systematic of Designificative Tendencies in Translation. Translation analysis showed that in certain contexts with subjectivity, there were designificative tendencies in rendering the context into Turkish while subjectivity was preserved in a great many contexts. The findings obtained from translation evaluation point to the fact that translators might resort to certain designificative tendencies in literary translation; however, with a semiological analysis of the original text these designificative tendencies could be minimized. Even when literary translators resor to designificative tendencies, they could explain their preferences in translation if they are already familiar with designificative tendencies in literary translation.
