Nowadays learning and teaching concepts are taking place intensively in the online environment with the opportunities provided by developing technology. In this context, the online environments that combine the student, the material and the teacher enable a new dimension of learning in our country and in the world. Thanks to the communication technologies, students, teachers and teaching materials in different places are easily accessible. The concept of distance education has come into the limelight with the development of communication technologies that help to remove the problem of time and space in education, and learning management systems for online learning environments have begun to be developed. With Learning Management Systems, processes such as presenting, editing, sharing, creating discussion environments, creating homework-exam applications, adding and managing courses, providing feedback, evaluation and reporting can be easily carried out. The learning management system softwares that include these features are divided into two categories as commercial and open source systems. In this study, open source learning management systems preferred by universities and learning management systems that were developed by universities have been compared and the results have been presented in tables. As a result, it is aimed to make the selection easier by emphasizing the differences between the learning management systems that are preferred for the online education environments. The study will contribute to the field by underlining the most important points that should be taken into account in the selection and decision-making process of the learning management system of the universities, the educational institutions and the educators who will use the learning management systems themselves.
