Abstract:

This article analyses the problems of translating novels from Turkish into Russian caused by the difference between the structures of the languages. It considers the case studies of the Russian translations of O. Pamuk’s “My name is Red” and “Snow”. The article also presents the problems that occur during the translation of the Present Simple tense form from Turkish into Russian. This form in Turkish is considered to be a seperate tense, while in Russian it is a secondary function of the Future tense. Our aim was to define which tense forms are preferable to use to convey the semantic meaning of the Turkish Present Simple tense when translating into Russian. It must be pointed out that alternative grammatical forms are permitted when translating the Turkish Present Simple tense into Russian. The possibility of using such alternative forms in Russian linguistics is called “Aspect and Tense verb forms rivalry”, which cause another problem called “redundancy”. “Redundancy” is researched not only in Russian philology but in linguistics on the whole. It means using perfective and imperfective verbs to convey the semantic meaning of the Present Simple tense that can be interchanged without distorting the meaning. A situation when the translator has to chose one or another verb form is called a “translation difficulty”. Due to analytical and comparative analysis the main meanings of the Present Simple tense forms in Russian have been defined. They have revealed the similiarities and differences between these forms when comparing languages. In this article the importance of the approach “from meaning to form” and “from form to meaning” is stressed. It also analyzed semantic deviations, stylistic nuances, and the reflection of grammatical differences of two languages when translating.
