Occupational and technical education has a significant impact on industrial and economic development of a country due to the qualifications of the manpower it creates. A channel such an education is offered is vocational schools. These schools play a critical role in training the technical manpower in a developing country with a flourishing industry such as ours. This makes determination of vocational school's students' outlook on future, their concerns and levels of hopelessness even more important. This research was conducted to investigate the level of hopelessness and the factors that influence such a level in students studying in Computer Technologies departments of Marmara University as the state university and Arel University Vocational School as the foundation university. The data of the research were acquired by survey method. The survey form used in the research was composed of two sections. The first section contains variables that are considered to have effect on the level of hopelessness in students such as age, gender, household income, the success rate in school, the education level of parents, whether parents live together, whether the mother or the father is alive, the number of siblings and satisfaction from the school they attend. In the second part of the survey, Beck Hopelessness Scale, translated into Turkish by Seber (1991), was used to determine the level of despair of the students. Using the scores obtained from the hopelessness scale of students, two clusters are created as optimists and pessimists by applying cluster analysis. As a result, state school students are classified as pessimists because of the lower score they achieved in the hopelessness analysis when compared to the students in the foundation university. To be able to identify the factors affecting the level of despair, an independent samples t-test and variant analysis are conducted. As a consequence, the variables affecting the level of hopelessness in students were identified as whether parents are still together, the level of income and the level of satisfaction with the university they attend.
