The mosque, which is situated in Adakale (the old center of Ardanuç district) in the province of Artvin was built by Iskender Pasha. The mosque was also used in the Akkoyunlu period. Before the conquest of Ardanuç in 1551, it was badly damaged, but Iskender Pasha restored the mosque. Thus, his name was given to the mosque. Nowadays, it is open for prayers. Next to the Iskender Pasha Mosque, there are three tombs named Sefer Pasha, Hatice Hanım and Süleyman Pasha. Some researchers reported different named for these tombs. While the tombs are known to have graves, they are in miserable conditions as people have looked for treasure inside. It is estimated that the Süleyman Pasha Tomb was built in the 16th century, the Sefer Pasha Tomb in the 17th, and the Hatice Hanım Tomb in the 18th century. There are also some shops, a Turkish bath and a fountain in the same street where the mosque is located. Some sources state that the mosque was built by Sefer Pasha. However, Sefer Pasha had only a Turkish bath and a madrasah built in the surrounding region of the mosque. In this study, we have investigated the mosque’s income and its staff. We also provide information about the mosque for a period starting with the 16th century.
