The studies about antagonist are generally carried out in the field of classical Turkish literature. However, the competition between the lover and the antagonist has reflected on the folk poetry and thus on the folk songs beside the classical Turkish poetry. Especially the folk songs which treat the subject of love in all aspects are the products which compose way too rich and authentic samples about the relationship between the lover, loved and the antagonist. The antagonist, who harms the relationship between the lover and the loved and sometimes causes them to separate forever, has taken its place in the folk songs through diverse denotations and roles. Even though the concept of antagonist is used in the folk songs, we see that the word is not used too often. Instead, the concept of antagonist is treated through the Turkish words –el (eller), yad, yad el, (foreign person/people, someone, strange) and etc. Above them, so many names and titles are also used to depict the antagonist. In some folk song texts, it is seen that the antagonist is processed with no naming. Based on the subject processed in those folk songs and diverse expressions used in that context, it is understood that the addressee is the antagonist. In this article, we have studied the concept of antagonist on the basis of folk songs samples where the antagonist is either stated by name or implied. The texts used in our study as sample have been chosen through the scanning of thousands of folk songs present at diverse press sources and included in the TRT repertoire. As a result, the characteristics of the antagonist that are reflected on the folk songs are ascertained.
