Value(s), as a concept which is related with the realm of human existence, is an important theme accentuated in many fields of life from politics to business and from education to media. The world’s new conditions of great change and transformation have revealed the need to teach values and it has come to the point that educational institutions undertake various responsibilities in this regard. However, as a reflection of the positivist understanding of science, the issue of “should schools teach values?” was discussed in educational community, then it was understood that these discussions were not reasonable and realistic, and then the focus was “how can schools teach values?” At this point, the issues of which values/whose values schools teach and whether the appropriate values for everyone can be determined have generated important discussions. As a result of these discussions, different approaches emerged in the teaching of values. This study aims to evaluate the possibility of specifying and teaching of acceptable and appropriate values from various aspects. In this study, the concept of “value” is emphasized, developments that reveal values education as a necessity are discussed, the problem of the source of values as a subject that makes compromise difficult in determining appropriate values is examined and a general framework about how to design values education in schools is presented.
