The aim of this study is to investigate the “efficiency” of the banking sector in Turkey by grouping the banks according to their ownership structures In this consequence applying data envelope analysis DEA on consolidated balance sheet variables as a base bank groups between 1980 2004 years prepared by Turkish Banks Association The main finding of this study suggests that foreign banks are the most efficient banks in the sector followed by state owned banks while the private banks are at the bottom of the efficiency list The data also shows that the efficiency trends of foreign and local banks are similar despite the significant differences in their efficiency scores This suggests that private and local banks effect each other and are both prone to the contextual financial and economic ebbs and flows Keywords: Financial liberalization foreign banks accessing banking efficiency data envelope analysis DEA Turkey
