Abstract:

Archaeobotany is a discipline that has gained importance in the discipline Archaeology The increasing use of flotation sytems in archaeological projects during the past 20 years has illustrated the important role of plant remains and other small finds for understanding prehistory Until quite recently archaeobotanical materials were normally used to solve traditional issues concerning domestication and subsistence However with the advent of large scale flotation paleoethnobotanists have also been able to study the intrasite spatial variability of plant remains allowing for the definition of stratigraphy and cultural contexts Furthermore archaeobotanical remains have also been used to address more complex issues of meaning and contextual interpretations Plants have been used for various purposes throughout history mainly as food building material various tools and medicine and in religious and social activities The plant remains can be found different states according to the conditions of preservation like uncarbonised charred mineralised dried impressions and into the dung Archaeobotany has gained importance in the Anatolian Archaeology too Initially stıudies focusing on this topic have started in the Near East and spreaded into Anatolia The early studies back in the 1950s in the Near East have constituted the base for the ones in Anatolia which continued in the 1960s with studies in Neolithic settlements in Anatolia such as Çatalhöyük Beycesultan and Hacılar Key Words: Archaeobotany Flotation Archaeology
