This study analyzes the effects of globalization in the labor market and also the relationship between these effects and poverty The accumulation of unemployment at an increasing rate in the lower income groups in a country is the main factor in worsening the income distribution and therefore causing poverty to be an insolvable problem This situation is either ignored or not given enough attention in the debates related to globalization However especially in the developing countries factors that cause chronical disequilibria in labor market are at the center of instabilities affecting the whole economic structure In this context this study tries to anwer to questions: i Is the labor market a transition mechanism in the process of globalization ? ii Could the labor market policies be used to eradicate poverty ? It is shown that answers to these questions are yes with some reservations In this paper some stylized facts and debates about this subject are also analyzed Key Words: Globalization unemployment poverty labor market policies
