Both existence of proverbs and the variants of those variants are abundant in almost all languages Some variants of proverbs can also be seen in Turkey Turkish The question is what extent it is true to evaluate these variants as random or simply word games? For example in a Turkish proverb “Abdal ata binince bey oldum sanır ” is equal to the proverb “Şalgam aşa girince yağ oldum sanır What are the common qualities used in different variants carrying the same meaning in the above proverb with the paired words “abdal” and “şalgam” “at” and “aş” and “bey” and “yağ” Although different words are used in both sentences they imply the same meaning using only different variants It appears that just as in other linguistic productive activities the equivalences are of great assistance to understand how a certain community of a language thinks This study intends to reach some findings related to conceptual fields of Turkish community analyzing the proverbs in terms of their equivalences Key Words: Proverbs variable variant equivalence history of Turkish culture structure of thought conceptual field
