CLEANING CONSERVATION AND DATING OF A GROUP OF ANCIENT COINS FROM THE MERSİN ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM Archaeological studies undertaken in Historic Cilicia revealed that approximately 40 cities had minted their coins Due to internal and external abrasive conditions coins were degraded and classified as survey specimen and comprises major part of the coins in most of the museums in Turkey as well as the Archaeological Museum of Mersin Alteration of coins made from various metals still continued due to their chemical structures and storing conditions which causes to lost the archaeological importance of the coins Thus for the detailed determination of the processes causing alteration a group of coins were selected from Archaeological Museum of Mersin Coins were mechanically cleaned at the initial stage of the study and a conservation study was undertaken on one of the coin which faced a high level of Bronze Illness Following morphological and chemical studies a chronological catalog was prepared by means dating and designation studies This research revealed that at whatever stage of chemical and physical degradation survey coins would be well conserved by means of careful studies And attention is required that each coin with its historical evidence will shed light on particular period of the archaeology which were not known in detail Key Words : Cilicia Coins Conservation Mersin Museum
