In Turkey, university museums/ collections, are a result of great efforts of individuals and they have a great deal to teach about museum studies as a discipline. In this article we first tell the formation story of the Şükrü Tül Collection of Antiquities which goes back to 2003, its founding idea, aims and processes. After Şükrü Tül passed away in 2015, it became obligatory to document this process, which is important not only for our institutional and departmental memory but also for museology as it is instructive in terms of the problems experienced, sources used and potentials inherit in the university. In the West, especially in England, where their necessity has been questioned, the university museums had to prove their essentiality for their institutions by pointing out their contribution to higher education and their creative potential that makes alternative education models- specifically object based learning- possible. In Turkey, possibilities of using university museums/ collections for higher education are still highly neglected. This article shall present ideas regarding the use of Şükrü Tül Collection for the education of the students of Dokuz Eylül University, the formation of its current design and opportunities for the future.
