Values education has been implemented consciously and in diff erent intensities in National Education system of Turkey since 2003. These applications have gained new momentum from 2010 onwards. However, on the other hand the intellectual dimension of the application and the values education whether among the school’s objectives or not continues to be debated. In this article the necessity of values education in schools discussed in the context of philosophical foundations of education, social and individual reasons and diff erent values education approaches have been studied in the terms of intellectual background they are based on, application process, advantages and disadvantages. Using document review technique of qualitative research methods we conclude that: values education is required for individual, society even education for itself and holistic education approach yielded more positive results in practice.
