Abstract:

The province of Adana and its immediate surrounding hasn’t been on the fore front until late 19th century. After that date, modern agriculture techniques depending on irrigation were employed to open abovementioned to agriculture, and industrialization has gained impetus in 1950’s. This study is carried out to investigate changes that took place in the land use in the vicinity of Adana as a consequence of rapid growth of the town. For determining changes of land (not only visual ones) use in the study area, historical resources and Landsat satellite outputs. While changes that took place in the land use were depicted by means of satellite images, causes of such change as well as development of the province are addressed within the historical process. It is known that earliest growth of Adana and changes of land use in its surrounding were launched in late 19th century upon introducing of the Çukurova plain to agriculture. However, main areal growth of the city and changes of land use in its vicinity are related with industrialization movements and immigration from rural to urban areas after 1980. As an example, the urban area of approximately 3000 ha in 1972 increased beyond 15000 ha by growing 5 times in 2010. As a result of such rapid urbanization; forest and dry farming areas continuously shrank between 1990 and 2010, whereas urban and irrigated agricultural areas got wider. The city has witnessed rapid population growth, industrialization and widening laterally due to its agricultural production capacity, mild climatic conditions and transportation facilities. This, on the other hand, brings about many problems including shrinking of high quality cultivated area, environmental pollution, infrastructural problems and deformation of the nature. For instance; agricultural lands are exploited to meet increasing demand for food and industrial raw materials with the help of chemicals. On the other hand, it shrinks quickly due to urbanization and industrialization activities. Keywords: Geographic Information Systems, urban expansion, Temporal Changes, land use, Turkey.
