From the historical times to today, the cities have witnessed the changes and transformations due to different reasons. Aftermath of Industrial Revolution, the impact of population on cities has made a geometric way of changes and transformations’ speed which resulted in some problems such as unplanned urbanization, infrastructural problems, urban pollution and cultural conflicts. The cities which remind a living organism have maintained their developments through several geographic reasons. In our century the cities are subjected to a different transformation and change. A case that have started to affect both the structural and socio-cultural and change the structural texture of cities; an urban transformation and evolution process which is named as “Gentrification”. With a simple definition of gentrification is the low-income groups in urban areas are replaced by the middle and upper income groups as a result of the renewal of housing in the area. In spite of the fact that the gentrification is more popular in world cities like New York and London, it has been experienced in the regional cities such as Minneapolis and Philadelphia in USA and Manchester and Glasgow in England. We have identified Istanbul, which is more crowded than many countries in terms of population size, as field of study within the framework of gentrification. Including Fatih, Gaziosmanpaşa, Bağcılar, Kadıköy, there are 16 districts in which urban renewal takes place. In this context, the transformation and the change of Istanbul make an example of gentrification which is occurred at the global scale. The field of study will be analysed by urban geography perspective within the concept of gentrification. The urban renewal areas will be examined and the change, transformations and it’s social-cultural reflections will be put forward.
