In this study, it was attempted to reveal the distribution of industry of manufacturing and the employees working in the sector and its development in TURKSTAT (Turkish Statistics Institute) Level 1 regions, in the period of 1964-2001. In addition, in order to clearly show the comparison of development and differences across regions, the Kruskal Wallis h test was used. Beside the increase in the number of firms of manufacturing industry, a decrease in the number of both state firms and the employees working for them has been evidenced between 1964 and 2001. For instance, whereas 5.6 % percent of all firms belonged to the state in 1964, this rate decreased to 2.4 % in 2001. Similarly, the rate of employees in these firms decreased from 34.8 to 10.4. These changes and developments have not been the same for the regions. According to the results of the Kruskal Wallis test h test, the region of Istanbul has the highest rate of development in terms of the number of total and private firms and the employees working for them and is in the first order. On the other hand, it could not show the same achievement in state firms and has declined to the eighth order. Eastern Black Sea Region, which had the biggest development with no loss in state firms, reached tenth order among the Level 1 regions when evaluated in terms of all firms. The region which was subjected to the least loss in terms of the employees in state firms was Eastern Marmara. While Aegean Region is just behind Istanbul according to the developmental rate of both state and private industrial firms of manufacturing; it is in the fourth order in terms of the development of state firms. In the regions located in the eastern part of Turkey, the average number of firms of manufacturing and their employees is very low and also the development in these regions have been very slow. North-eastern Anatolia, being in the last place for the averages of all variables, is the least developed region. Keywords: Industry of manufacturing firms, employees, private sector, state sector.
