Kitabın önsözünde yazım gerekçesi açıklanmıştır. Buna göre her yıl düzenlenen tarihyazımı çalıştayları sırasında akademisyenlerin önerileri ve öğrencilerin beklentileri güncel bir metodoloji ders kitabı ihtiyacını hissettirmiştir. Bu ihtiyaç nedeni ile hazırlanan kitabın amacı tarih bölümlerinde iki ayrı dönemde Metodoloji veya Tarihte Usul/Yöntem adıyla okutulan derslere katkı sağlamaktır. Söz konusu çalışma, tarihçi olmak isteyen herkesin kuramsal ihtiyaçlarını gidererek metodolojik bir bakış açısı ile tarih araştırması yapabilmesi için bir başvuru kaynağı olarak tasarlanmıştır. Bu makalede de Tarih İçin Metodoloji kitabının amaçları ve hedef kitlesi dikkate alınarak tanıtımı ve değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır.
