Abstract:

In this study, it is aimed to find out teachers’ opinions about performance tasks given at the first degree of primary education. The study was carried out on teachers working at primary schools in Hatay province in 2009-2010 education year. The survey model was used in this study. The population of the study is composed of 147 primary schools in Antakya city center. The sample consists of 309 teachers chosen from 37 primary schools by cluster sampling method. As data collection tool was questionnaire which consisted of 5 likert-type closedended questions and semi-structured interview form that consisted of open-ended questions used. It was identified as a result of the study that the teachers stated that performance tasks are useful, lead the students for thinking, enable permanent learning, develop research and critical thinking skills of students and students associate the things they learnt with daily life. With regards to the problems experienced about performance tasks; it has been found out that tutors’ negative behaviours affect the students negatively, time is inadequate for assessing the tasks, improper use of internet and computer affect the students negatively, the students do not know why they do the performance tasks, the students complain about financial burdens of the tasks, the tasks are taken from internet as they are, without any effort, and a great deal of the tasks are done by tutors.
